Multimodal Transport: Beyond Door to Door

Growing costs of logistics has forced industry and trade to adopt cost effective logistics solutions to move the cargo. India's traditional dependence on road even for long distances is looked at as a serious constraint and concerns are rising to improve the other modes of transportation viz. rail and coastal shipping.

Association of Multimodal Transport Operators of India (AMTOI) comes up with a unique eventĀ  AMTOI Business Forum aimed at developing multimodal transportation in India. The forum, while highlighting the importance for multimodal transportation, also revolves around the need to innovate, adopt best practices and align business in tune with customer requirements.

12:00 pm to 1:30 pm - Theme: Multimodal Transportation Today & Tomorrow
The potential for multimodal transportation today in India is huge, given the colossal requirement for moving goods across the country. With both the domestic and international trade growing at healthy rates year on year, multimodal operators are looking forward to reap benefits associated. As the consolidation wave sweeps through the logistics sector, multimodal operators stand to benefit through healthy competition and level playing field. The trend of logistics outsourcing is steadily picking among the manufacturing fraternity and newer strategies in outsourcing and goods transportation are expected to evolve in the near future augmenting the need for multimodal transportation.

Given this potential, judicious mix of different modes of transport needs to be brought in. While the share of rail and coastal shipping as modes of transport should to be improved, dependence on road needs to be reduced. On the policy front, issues like Multimodal Transportation of Goods (MMTG) Act remain to be addressed. Dedicated freight corridors, that are expected to take shape in the next five to six years, will provide the necessary boost multimodal operators as more volumes will shift to rail.

On the face of growing competition in this trade, multimodal transport operators have the immediate mandate of building competitive advantage and sustaining through the long run. While growing trade volumes have encouraged more players to enter this segment, it is characterized by thin profit margins. Added to this are other business risks like forex risks and operational risks that have considerable impact on the bottom lines.

Given the scenario, multimodal operators are forced to innovate and bring in new business models and new strategies to increase their turnover and remain in the business. MTOs are today looking at consolidating their position through more of horizontal integration and hence more mergers & acquisitions are expected in future. Only those who have access to cost-effective funds succeed in this game. Building long lasting relationships with customers has become extremely important and the need to adopt innovative approaches to retain customers is ever increasing.

Getting into the shoes your customer is no small act. It takes a lot of dedication and perseverance over a stretched duration of time to understand the needs and unique of requirements of the customer. Multimodal transport operators / freight forwarders are well positioned over other LSPs to better understand and service the client. Innovation-based customer approach is what is necessary in today's competitive world to gain the trust of the customer. Building longstanding relationships with customers require the MTOs to engage them in more pro-active ways and provide a win-win work environment. Therefore, as there are umpteen opportunities to partner with the client, so are the challenges in building successful relationships. The ones who are successful are the ones who have understood and migrated to their customer's value chain.
